So you're interested in P90X. But you might be asking "So who is this Tony Horton guy anyway?" Well Tony Horton's story is one of a less than healthy kid turned fitness phenom. His inspiring story demonstrates his "bring it!" attitude toward fitness, and toward life.
Anthony (Tony) Sawyer Horton was born in July 2, 1958 in Westerly, Rhode Island. He moved frequently thanks to his father's career, and this likely helped Tony develop the outgoing, showman personality that makes him so compelling in his videos, since he had to make friends fairly quickly after each move. This also played a role in his desire to be an actor in college.
While he was never all that great of an athlete during his school years, he was a dedicated student. He preferred sports like gymnastics or skiing, although a love of junk food kept him from really being great like his dad, who had set records in team sports while in high school. It wasn't until he went to college at University of Rhode Island that he really began to take his fitness seriously. He had a desire to be an actor and figured it could only help to be in shape.
Through years of studying and hard work, Tony transformed his own body, preferring to be lean and sculpted in a time when having huge bulky muscle was all the rage. And his friends began to take notice. Tony became a personal trainer in southern California and even became the face of Nordic Track. In 1996, he formed his partnership with Beachbody.com after his personal training techniques transformed the body of the founder of Beachbody.com.
Tony has a unique motivational style. It can best be described as a combination of drill sergeant and cheerleader. This combined with his unique sense of humor makes his work out DVDs as enjoyable as they are tough. He's fond of using sayings such as "Do your best and forget the rest." In one part of the yoga DVD in the series, he comments that Downward Dog Magazine is coming in to shoot their cover so make it the best downward dog of your life. It makes you chuckle each time you hear it.
Tony has developed 11 laws for a lifetime of fitness.
• Variety
Variety is the spice of life and it will help keep you from getting bored with your workouts.
• Consistency
Starting and stopping a workout routine is the fastest way to lose momentum. Moderate levels of exercise on a regular basis will prove to be most effective.
• Intensity
Many people hold back for fear of failure, but if you can "find your line", you'll truly see results.
• Purpose
Exercising and eating right helps you feel better and give you more energy to get out there and live your life.
• Reality
People spend a lot of time looking back at what was, or looking forward at what will be. It's important to look at right now, because right now is all there is.
• Sports
People often forget that exercising isn't just about weights and cardio. Activities such as dancing, mountain biking, hiking and even ping pong are great ways to get moving, without the monotony of the gym.
• The Plan
Try and schedule workouts in advance and work out with a friend if possible. This will help keep you accountable and you'll be less likely to quit.
• Sleep and Stress
Stressed out, sleep deprived people don't take care of themselves. It's impossible to stay healthy if you burn the candle at both ends.
• Loving It
It's hard to stay with something you hate. If what your doing doesn't work, then switch it up until it does.
• Food and Supplements
As the saying goes, you are what you eat, so eating a healthy diet and filling in the holes with supplements will help you recover from your workout faster and reach your goals sooner.
By observing these laws of fitness, and embracing Tony's "bring it" attitude, men and women alike are able to transform their bodies and their lives, just like Tony did.
