I would really love to know for sure where the future of Glamour Images lies. Then I would definitely inform you about it, my dear reader, in my blog about glamour images. However, it may well turn out that we "knights of light and lens" will be down with our chips. Almost a half of the whole creative process is now performed in applications like Photoshop. The first half of the creation process, the actual taking of a photograph, is still with us. The time may come though when photographers are replaced by specialized 3D rendering software.
But in order to get a feel for the future of something it is absolutely worth taking a close look at the present and also visiting the past.
There was time when beauty images and glamour art only existed in the form of oil paintings. Renowned painters like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci created those paintings: from innocent face portraits to nudes. In the middle of the 19th century the first cameras became available. These were big bulky dry-plate cameras for studio use, which required quite long shutter times. Portraits became popular fast, but the subjects had to sit or stand completely still for quite a long time. In order to help them hold their head, head-clamps were used. Obviously, with a clamped head a model usually will not add a lot of glamour to a glamour photo.
With the development of visual arts and the technical progress it all became simpler. The emergence of film made beauty photography a lot easier and more affordable. Such images attracted attention of magazines. I can recall the Playboy photographer David Mecey talking about the very recent past, in which they had to shoot every Playboy centerfold with large format cameras for quality reasons. This meant that they had to use a ton of light and a lot of times they blew the fuses of the location on which they were shooting when they started to use their strobes.
Nowadays glamour images take full advantage of the digital format. Those of small and medium-sized format. Due to the increased quality and resolution almost any digital camera can produce a photo to fit on a magazine's centerfold.
So now the possible ways for Glamour Photography to progress look quite intriguing. Shall we witness the dawn of 3D technology? If so, then this future already started. My favorite German magazine on Photoshop now features more and more articles about 3D rendering programs. Internet now hosts more and more 3D rendered glamour pictures. Some of my friends on the Web who are complete virtual identities and such: they post entirely rendered pictures to Flickr. Their own virtual glamour gallery! When looking through some websites it appears everybody uses 3D applications only to produce some exotic and good-looking female characters, elves and so on. Indeed, they bear much resemblance with glamour pictures.
It might turn out that I, the guy with a DSLR, will soon be an endangered species. Glamour artists be wary, but don't fall to panic! Personally, I trust in what I do. Just as painting and film have survived, there will always be a huge demand for digital glamour images, made with a DSLR, inspiration, fine lighting and much love.
